The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will be in force from 2024. British citizens and nationals of other third countries/non-EU states, who up until now could enter the Schengen Area without a visa, will be required to obtain this travel authorisation permit before entering Italy and other countries in the Schengen Area for a maximum period of 90 days in any 180 day period.
The ETIAS will be a “security screening tool” to confirm identity and assess the security risks of foreign nationals who wish to enter any countries of the Schengen Area. The application will be online. It is possible that the authorisation could be denied, for example where the application is incomplete or a name is misspelt or has inconsistencies. Also if an application is flagged on the Schengen Information System (SIS), a database of criminal activity, for example if the applicant has previously over-stayed, there will be a refusal and a right of appeal.
The ETIAS will cost adults 7 Euro. Minors and those over 70 will receive an ETIAS free of charge. Bar the small fee that applicants will need to incur when visiting the Schengen Area, they will also have to plan in advance to obtain their travel authorisation before booking travel tickets and accommodation. This will be difficult for those who want to travel last minute. We will be monitoring the introduction of the system and bring further news when there is a confirmed date for the new system.
