New procedural requirements for UK nationals intending to marry in Italy

From 1st March 2013, UK nationals, resident in the UK and intending to marry in Italy, now need to provide the following documentation:

  • Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage – this must be issued by the local registry office in the UK, fixed with an Apostille and translated into Italian;
  • Bilingual Statutory Declaration – made in front of a UK Lawyer or Notary and also fixed with an Apostille.

The previous requirement was to present a “Nulla Osta”, (“No Impediment”) document obtained from a British Consulate in Italy – this document will still be issued and accepted until the 31st August 2013, however after this date British Consulates will not issue this documentation and they will not be accepted by Italian authorities.

This new procedure does not apply to English citizens resident in the UK who intend to marry an Irish citizen in Italy; the “Nulla Osta” requirement will still apply in these situations.
